Welcome to the City of Glasgow Royal Naval Association's web site.

All former and serving members of the Royal Navy, Royal Naval Reserve and Merchant Marine services welcome (We even allow other services in to spin a few yarns as well). Come along and have a few wets while shareing your stories and ditties with old and new shipmates.

NFA Xmas Luncheon

On the 10th eight of our members were invited to the Dalmahoy Hotel and Country Club for an Xmas Lunch hosted by the Not Forgotten Association. We were entertained with singing and a few games one of which was the twelve days of Christmas. S/m Anne Cox entertained us with her impression of Elvis Presley. In the raffle three of our members won prizes. Our chairman gave Rosie a cheque for £100 on behalf of our branch. A very good afternoon was had by all.

Children's Hospital Visit

On the 6th S/m's Kenn McKinnon, Brian MacKenzie, David Carlin and Robert MacKay visited the Children's Hospital Play Group to deliver some toys and books. S/m Kenn McKinnon presented them with a cheque for £400 for their funds. We were invited to have some tea and biscuits and a chat with some of the staff. S/m David even got to meet Santa.

Awareness day Morrisons

On the 3rd S/m's Brian MacKenzie, Alec Thomas and Kenn McKinnon held another awareness day at the Morrison's store in Auchenlee. We raised a goodly sum which will be use to help fund events and other charities. Thank you to the lads for their time and effort. The picture is of Brian and Alec although they should have been wearing ELVES HATS.

Tea with Prince Charles

. S/m Anne Cox entered the Sun competition to be a Prince Charles 70th birthday tea at Spencer House, London. She received an invitation to the afternoon tea and was accompanied by S/m Anne McKinnon. They enjoyed meeting the prince and had a great time

Remembrance Sunday

On Sunday 11th 8 of our members attended the service in George Square for the 100 year commemorative service since the guns fell silent in the first world war. Thank you to S/m Brian for carrying our standard, thank you to S/m Anne Cox for laying the wreath on behalf of our branch. Six of our members were invited to join Princess Anne and other dignatories at Glasgow Cathedral for a memorable service to the 100 years commemoration.

Garden of Remembrance

On the 30th 4 of our members attended the Garden of Remembrance Service in George Square. The service was conducted by The Reverend Dr Karen Campbell. S/m Kenn McKinnon laid a wreath on behalf of the City of Glasgow RNA and S/m Brian MacKenzie displayed our standard.

Trafalgar/Seafarers

On Sunday the 21st four of us attended the Seafarers service in Glasgow Cathedral. S/m Brian had our Standard on display.

Social Night

On Friday 19th we held a social night in Curlers Rest in Byres Road. The night went well with a good buffet. We had a splice the main brace and a few words from the chairman Kenn and from our secretary a short speech on Nelson and Trafalgar.

URNU Trafalgar

S/m Brian Mackenzie attended the URNU Trafalgar dinner at Glasgow University on Friday 12th.

Cadet Inspection

Six of our members attended TS Queen Elizabeth cadet unit in Clydebank for the inspection by Captain Peter Adams RN. We were shown evolutions on how to identify various marker buoys and the light signals that indicate safe passage. The second evolution described how various sailing vessels should give way to power vessels Etc. The third evolution was how to secure your boat to a jetty/pier and the use of various types of knots. Our chairman Kenn was asked to present the Frank Halliday Trophy to their top cadet Joanne Durnan for achievement that best promotes the unit.

New War Memorial Dedication

On Saturday 29th September five of our members attended the dedication ceremony of a new war memorial in Alexandra Park, Dennistoun, Glasgow. We mustered at City Park in Dennistoun and marched along the Parade to Alexandra Park where the ceremony was carried out. The turn out for this was very good. After the ceremony we were invited to the Masonic Club in Wood Street for refreshments and a Buffet.

Awareness Day

On Friday 14th September we had another awareness day at the Morrison's store in Auchenlea. Thanks to S/ms Kenn McKinnon, Brian MacKenzie, Anne McKinnon and Anne Cox for giving up their time to assist on the day.

Arras Commemoration

S/m Brian Mackenzie had our standard on display at the Glasgow Cathedral on Sunday 2nd September for the 100 years commemoration of the Battle of Arras. This was hosted by SSAFA. The turn out was poor with approximately 15 veterans from all associations in attendance. Thank you Brian for displaying our standard.

HMS Hood Commemoration

On Wednesday 22nd August four of our members attended the 100 year commemoration of the launch of HMS Hood at the West College, Clydebank Which has been built on the old John Brown ship yards where she was built. Rear Admiral Philip Wilcocks CB DSC DL gave a talk on her life in the RN. Commander William Sutherland RN gave a talk on her construction.

Inter Association Games

Our Chairman Kenn McKinnon and Secretary Brian MacKenzie attended the RBLS/Edinburgh & East of Scotland, Inter-Association Games Day at the Tramways Bowling Club, Pilrig Street, Edinburgh. We were part of an RNA team in the bowls and dominoes contests along with two teams from the WRNS. We managed to reach the quarter finals in the bowls where a team from the Royal Artillery Association knocked us out by 1 point. There was food laid on with sandwiches during the afternoon and Curry/Stovies at 1800. These went down well with quite a few singing gingers. A very good day was had by all.

BBQ

On Saturday 21st we held a BBQ at the cadet unit in Clydebank. Our chef S/m Brian Mackenzie was in charge of the BBQ watched carefully by his good lady Irene Mackenzie. A big thank you to the both of them for providing excellent fare. We held a raffle which raised £40 for the cadet funds. Thank you to all who attended and to the cadet unit for the use of their premises.

Life Membership

At our branch meeting on 19th July S/m Brian MacKenzie in his role as Chairman of the Scottish Area presented S/m Kenny McKinnon, Chairman of the Glasgow branch with a Life Membership of the RNA and a pennant from the Scottish area.

AFD Parade

On Saturday 30th June 6 of our members were on parade for Armed Forces Day. Thank you to S/m Brian MacKenzie for parading our standard. After the Parade we adjourned to the city chambers for a civic reception hosted by the Lord Provost Eva Bolander.

HMS Glasgow Affiliation

Our association was invited by BAE Systems to be affiliated with the new type 26 frigate HMS Glasgow being built at Govan. On Thursday 28th ten of our members were invited to go to BAE Systems in Govan for an introduction to the new build and to view the work carried out so far on HMS Glasgow. We were given a talk and virtual walk through of the ship by the senior production manager Dave Skinner. We were then taken to the construction section to see how they cut the steel and form it to the various shapes required. We will be invited back to view the different stages of the build. Our Chairman Kenn McKinnon Presented Nicola Woolfries, Communications Advisor with a plaque from the City of Glasgow RNA and pointed out that the crest was the crest used in all ships named Glasgow.

AFD Standard Raising

S/ms Kenneth McKinnon and Brian MacKenzie attended the Armed Forces Week Standard raising in George Square. S/m Brian had our Standard on display and was the only standard out of all the associations represented at the ceremony. After the short service we adjourned to the city chambers for some light refreshment and we chatted with the council bailies.

Area Meeting/Social

On Friday 15th we held a small social in the RBLS club in Knightswood. Thank you to the members and delegates who turned up. on Saturday 16th we hosted the Scottish Area meeting in the Buff's Club in Whiteinch at 11:00. The meeting was chaired by S/m Brian MacKenzie the Scottish Area Chairman. A welcome was given by S/m Kenn McKinnon the Glasgow RNA Chairman. Thank you to S/m's Anne McKinnon and Anne Cox for doing the catering. The loyal toast was given by the Area Treasurer.

Erskine Bikers Day

On the 27th of May Brian and myself assisted s/m Bernie to run an RNA stall at the Bikers Day in Erskine Hospital. There was over 1000 motor bikes in the parade which went round the village of Erskine before coming into the hospital. The weather was glorious for this event and every one had a great time. We had some off worlders visit IE: Darth Vader, Storm Troopers, Chewbacca, O'bwan Kenobi and Sand People.

New Wheels

At our monthly meeting on Thursday 17th S/m David Carlin finally received a set of new wheels for him to get about in. He is chuffed to bits with them. They were Presented by S/m Paul Ellis.

Secret Bunker Visit

On Saturday 12th we went on a visit to the secret bunker near Anstruther in Fife. We had a guide who explained about different sections and departments of the bunker which was set up during the cold war with Russia. It was built to withstand a nuclear strike of at least a 5 megaton war head. After the tour we went to Anstruther to partake of some fish and chips before returning to Glasgow.

The new commanding officer of URNU Lt Simon Collins RN invited the chairman Kenn McKinnon and secretary Brian MacKenzie to their awards ceremony on Thursday 3rd May at the Officer Training Unit in Glasgow University.

Awareness Day

On Friday 27th we held an RNA awareness day in the Morrisons store at Auchenlea where we raised the princely sum of £416.06 for our funds. Thank you to our volunteers Kenn McKinnon, Brian MacKenzie, Anne McKinnon and Anne Cox for their efforts on the day. We also made contact with some veterans who displayed an interest in the RNA which we hope they will attend. In the photo with Kenn and Brian is the stores community champion Joanna.

Fish and Chip Night

On Saturday 21st April we held a fish and chip night at the cadet unit in Clydebank. Fourteen of our members along with seven guests attended. A raffle was held which raised £70 for the cadets funds. After the meal we adjourned to the wardroom for a few refreshments. All in all a very good night was had.

Legion D'Honneur

Mr John Aiken RN (officer Steward) along with Mr Eric Robertson Army and Mr Kenneth Wilson Army today received the Legion D'Honeur from the French Consular General Emmanuel Cocher for their part in the D Day landings 6 June 1945. John served onboard HMS Enterprise which led the American forces to Omaha beach. He also served on HMS Stine and Manxman and in the far east. All the recipients are members of the RBLS at Knightswood, Glasgow.

SSAFA Luncheon

On the 16th five of our members and their guests attended the SSAFA luncheon at Graham House in Whitefield Road, Govan. Their new mascot SSAFALUMP was on display to the visitors and will be taking part in the kilt walk and marathon to raise funds for SSAFA. Our secretary S/m Brian MacKenzie handed over a cheque for £100 on behalf of the City of Glasgow RNA.

AGM

We held our AGM on 15th March where S/m Joan Lowe stood down as the vice chairman. S/m Alec Thomas was unanimously voted in as the new vice chairman.

Cadets Burns Night

On Friday 9th February 10 of our members and their guests/partners attended the Burns Night at the cadet unit in Clydebank. S/m Brian Mackenzie gave a speech to the immortal memory of Robert Burns. Many thanks to Rena and her helpers who did the catering the meal was excellent. This was followed by a raffle which raised £50 for the cadets funds. A very good night was had by all.

Battle of May Island 100 Year's Commemoration

On 31st January S/m's K McKinnon, B MacKenzie and D Carlin attended at St Ayles Churh in Anstruther for the 100 years commemoration of the Battle of May where 104 sailors lost their lives. The service was conducted by The Reverend Arthur Christie, minister of St Ayles and the Reverend Dr Karen Campbell, National chaplain of the Legion Scotland. Vice Admiral Sir Jonathon Woodcock KCB OBE and Mr Charles Brown National Chairman, Legion Scotland read a lesson from the bible. Brian MacKenzie, Chairman of the Scottish Area RNA carried our standard and read the Submariner's Prayer. After the service a small service was conducted at the memorial on the sea front.

Awareness Day

On Friday 12th S/m Brian and myself were in Sainsbury's store at Braehead with an awareness stall from 10:00 to 14:00. The day went well with a few enquiries as to where and when we meet. We did a little tin rattling and raising awareness of the RNA in Glasgow. Another very productive day.
