Welcome to the City of Glasgow Royal Naval Association's web site.

All former and serving members of the Royal Navy, Royal Naval Reserve and Merchant Marine services welcome (We even allow other services in to spin a few yarns as well). Come along and have a few wets while shareing your stories and ditties with old and new shipmates.

Not Forgotten Xmas Lunch

On Monday 12th 10 of our members were invited to join the Not Forgotten Association in the Double Tree by Hilton, Perth Road, Dunblane for a Christmas Luncheon. We were entertained by the two lovely singers who had us playing a game of Kings or Queens and a good game of the Twelve Days of Christmas. S/m Frank Halliday presented Rosie with a cheque for £100 from the City of Glasgow RNA. Many thanks to Rosie and the girls for a great day.

Children's Hospital Visit On 5th December S/m's Anne McKinnon, Joan Lowe, Alec Thomas, Thomas Gates and Chairman Kenn McKinnon delivered toys to the play group in the new children's hospital. We had some tea/coffee and biscuits with the staff then our chairman handed over a cheque for £300 for their funds. This was raised by the members and the Lennoxtown bowling club.

Remembrance Sunday

Five members turned out for this parade. S/m Brian MacKenzie took charge and the Standard was carried by S/m Kenny Grieve with the wreath being laid by S/m J Millar. Well done to those who turned out.

Glasgow's Garden of Remembrance

On the Tuesday 8th five of our members attended the service in George Square which was conducted by the Reverend Dr Karen K Campbell BD(Hons) MTh DMin. S/m Brian MacKenzie paraded the standard and S/m Kenn McKinnon laid the wreath. The service was followed by a buffet lunch in the city chambers.

TS Queen Elizabeth

On Wednesday 2nd November six of our members attended TS Queen Elizabeth's Cadet inspection and prize giving. The RNA prize of a Bosuns Call was presented to their best cadet. There was an evolution of navigation and one on semaphore signals which we struggled with. All in all a very good evening.

Seafarer's Service

On Sunday 23rd October seven of our members attended the Seafarer's Service in Glasgow Cathedral. Thank you to S/m Brian Mackenzie for parading our standard. The service was conducted by The Rev. Dr. L Whitley. The Rev. Mark Mander MA the RN Chaplin gave the sermon. Captain Chris Smith, Naval Regional Commander, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and Captain John Hood, RFA Seafarer's UK did readings from the bible.

Arrochar

The above pictures are copyright do not use. We once again celebrated Admiral Lord Nelson's victory at Trafalgar with a weekend and a celebratory dinner in the Arrochar Hotel. We had 33 members and guests at this event where two of our guests took a small part in the entertainment. Colin Botfield from URNU (Glasgow University) did a talk on Nelson in costume, and S/m Andy MacDonald from the Grangemouth Branch was roped in to do the compare at our SODS Opera. The company were most amused at this entertainment. S/m Edward Pollar donated a bottle of Pusser's Gunpowder for the toast to Nelson. S/m Brian MacKenzie is modelling the new RNA Tartan that has been commissioned for the National Conference in 2017. Anyone wishing to purchase any of the tartan can contact Brian his number is in the diary.

BNS Leopold Visit

On Friday 7th October S/m's Kenn McKinnon and Brian MacKenzie along with their partners were invited by Rear Admiral, Jose Enrique Delgado, ESP N Commander of the Standing NATO Maritime Group, to join him onboard the BNS Leopold which was docked in the King George V dock for a forces reception.

HMS Somerset Visit

S/m Kenn McKinnon and Brian MacKenzie were invited by the Naval Regional Commander Scotland and Northern Ireland Lt Cdr Kieth Conway to join him onboard HMS Somerset at the King GeorgeV dock where a reception and a capability demonstration with a tour of the ship was held. This was followed by Ceremonial Sunset at 21:00.

HMS Hood Centenary

On the 1st September 14 of our members were invited by HMS Hood Association to join them in the West of College Scotland, Clydebank to mark the centenary of the keel-laying of HMS Hood on 1st September 1916. Rear Admiral Wilcocks, Hood Association President greeted the guests and gave a short talk, The Hood in her time. This was followed by talks from Ms Audrey Cumberford, Principal and Chief Executive, West College Scotland. The building of HMS Hood by Mr Ian Johnston, historian and author who also introduced to veterans who had served on her, Commander Keith Evans 96 (Hood Association Chairman) and Mr Alec Kellaway 98. Rear Admiral Mark Baverstock unveiled a plaque to HMS Hood which will be displayed in the college.

VJ Day Knightswood

On Saturday 13th 5 of our members attended the service at Knightswood Cross to commemorate Victory over Japan. S/m Brian MacKenzie carried our standard. There was a service in St Margaret's Church followed by a short service and wreath laying at the memorial then a march down the Great western Road to the Lincoln Inn where the Lord Provost Sadie Docherty took the salute. A light buffet was provided in the Lincoln Inn.

BBQ

We held our BBQ on Saturday 16th in the Clydebank Cadet unit TS Queen Elizabeth. 20 members and 10 guests attended. Thanks to our chef S/m Brian Mackenzie and hi wife Irene for laying on an excellent spread. We held a raffle which raised £50 for the cadet's funds and had a good old sing song helped along with a few singing gingers.

Legion d'honneur

Five heroes of the D-Day landings have received France's highest decoration of honour in recognition of their bravery. The Scottish veterans were presented with the Legion d'Honneur medals at a reception in Paisley Town Hall. This was a service in a numbers of ceremonies being held throughout the UK to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944. Those honoured were Gerald Fisher 91 (City of Glasgow RNA), John Sneddon 90, Henry Bryce 91, Daniel McNicol 92 and Robert Faulds 96. All served in the royal navy. French Consul General for Scotland, Emmanuel Cocher, presented the former servicemen in recognition of their war efforts. He said: “ I am truly honoured to present these veterans with the Legion d'Honneur. France will never forget the bravery they showed the liberation of France 70 years ago.”

AFD George Square

S/ms Kenn McKinnon, Brian MacKenzie and Joan Lowe set up a stall in George Square selling RNA items IE: lanyards, badges, keyrings etc, with a few free gizzits for the kids. We also ran a tombola which was very successful. We had a good turn out for the parade from Holland Street to the square. Brian MacKenzie carried the standard and Eddie Pollar led the RNA Veterans. There was a civic reception for the veterans in the city chambers after the parade. Thanks to all who turned up and participated in the days events.

AFD Standard Raising

On Monday the 20th S/m's Kenn McKinnon and Brian MacKenzie attended the raising of the Armed Forces Day Standard on the City Chambers. Brian paraded the RNA Standard. There was a poor turn out for this event.

AFD Clydebank

Clydebank held their AFD Parade on the 12th June which was attended by some of our members. They marched from Queens Square to the town hall where the salute was taken. A buffet and refreshments were laid on in the hall.

Queen's 90th Birthday Party

On the 12th eight of our members were invited to Central Station by Scottish Rail to attend a tea party for the occasion of HM Queen Elizabeth's birthday. We were greeted by the head of the station and seated in the main concourse where we were served by very pleasant rail staff. Two of our members won prizes by having a lucky star on the underside of their plates. S/m Eddie won M&S vouchers and S/m Rita won train tickets from Virgin Trains to anywhere she wished to go. All in all a good afternoon was had by all.

100 Years of Erskine

On the 7th June four of our members were invited by Erskine Hospital to attend a service of remembrance in the Glasgow Cathedral. The guest of honour was HRH the Princess Royal. The service was commemorate 100 years of Erskine Hospitals service to the physically and mentally wounded servicemen, women and families of all wars past present and future. Erskine was set up in 1916 and has helped 85.000 servicemen and women todate.

Fish and Chip Night

On the 28th we held our social Fish and Chip night in TS Queen Elizabeth Cadet Unit in Clydebank. The Fish Suppers were delicious with plenty of wine etc to wash it down. There was a raffle which raised £55 which was presented along with a donation of £40 from S/m David Carlin and a Cheque for £200 from our branch which S/m George Troup accepted with thanks on behalf of the cadets.

BEM Presentation

On Thursday 26th six of our members were invited to TS Queen Elizabeth Cadet Unit in Clydebank to celebrate S/m Lt Cdr George Troupe receiving the BEM for his service to the cadets and community over the past sixty years. Well done George from all your shipmates in the branch.

Area Meeting

We hosted the Scottish Area Meeting on 21st May, chaired by S/m Brian Mackenzie. In attendance were nine area delegates and nine of our members. Many thanks to S/m's Anne McKinnon, Anne Cox and Rosemary Palmer for providing the catering for this occasion. The meeting was concluded with the loyal toast given by the President of the Scottish Area.

On Saturday 14th several of our members attended a service in Helensburgh to commemorate the Battle of Jutland. S/m Brian MacKenzie was on parade with our standard. Many thanks to all who took part.

Sir Gabriel Wood's Lunch

On 23rd March four of our members were invited by the staff of Sir Gabriel Wood's Home to attended a lunch in Inverkip Marina. The venue was held in a local hotel with good Scottish fare on offer IE: Fish and Chips or Mince and Tatties etc. Music and entertainment were provided with our members joining in with gusto and toe stomping on the dance floor.

20th Anniversary

On the 17th March at our AGM The City of Glasgow Branch celebrated 20 years since the formation of the branch. There are only three original members left they are Brian MacKenzie, David Carlin and William (Bill) Bannerman. Unfortunately Bill could not be in the Photograph as he is confined to home with a shoulder injury. In the Photo on the left is Brian Mackenzie (Secretary) and David Carlin (Treasurer). As our membership is improving we will be around for a long time yet.

Birthday Splice main Brace

We celebrated S/m Joan Lowe's 85th birthday with a Splice the Main Brace and presented her with a cake by the Hon Vice President Frank Halliday which we all enjoyed. Many thanks to Joan for supplying the rum.
